Jon Joffin, ASC is an inspired cinematographer, whose intriguing visual ideas grace some of today’s most innovative films and television shows, including The X-Files and Masters of Horror. Joffin has earned four ASC and five CSC awards, making him one of the most lauded artists in his field.
Joffin just wrapped shooting the third season of Invasion for Apple TV+. In 2024 Joffin won both the ASC and CSC awards for “At Home” Music Video performed by Jon Bryant. He also received an Emmy and ASC nomination for his work on the second season of Schmigadoon! for Apple TV+, and won the CSC award for the episode “Something Real” of that series.
He won the 2022 ASC award for Outstanding Cinematography for season three of Titans on the episode titled “Souls”. His other TV work also includes season three of Star Trek: Picard for Paramount + and the first season of the Netflix series Keep Breathing. Previously, he lensed the pilot and first season of Freeform’s Motherland, earning both an ASC and CSC award for his work on the series; the second season of Beyond for Freeform, winning an ASC Award for the episode “Two Zero One”; the television movie Tiny House of Terror for director Paul Shapiro, earning him a CSC award nomination for Best TV Drama Cinematography; and Rush, the USA Network series.
For features, Joffin lensed Haunter, which received an Audience Award nomination at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival; and Daydream Nation, noted for its stunning imagery, described by Variety as “moodily evocative.” He received a Best Achievement in Cinematography Genie Award nomination for his work on the film. He also received an ASC nomination and a Leo Best Cinematography award for his work on Syfy’s mini-series Alice, a quirky retelling of Alice in Wonderland directed by Nick Willing.
Joffin has worked with iconic science-fiction and horror directors including John Landis, Tobe Hooper, Mick Garris, Ernest Dickerson and Mikael Salomon. Influences on his style include photographers Julia Margaret Cameron and Sarah Moon, painters Rembrandt and Renoir as well as cinematographers Caleb Deschanel and Robert Richardson.
Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Joffin’s earliest experiences in the craft were with 16mm films and his father’s photography books; the family had no television. While young, he travelled the Middle East and Mauritius. He later studied at Toronto York University before embarking on a career in the film industry.
He is based in Vancouver, where he lives with his wife, costume designer Caroline Cranstoun and his son. He is represented by DDA.
