Kim Derko csc is an award winning Director of Photography and Director and a full member of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers, IATSE 667 & 669, The ICFC, ARRAY Crew and the Directors Guild of Canada.
A graduate of Emily Carr University of Art & Design in Vancouver, Kim Derko csc studied art history and colour theory which combined a passion for music, led to a career as a Music Video cinematographer/director and later to series and feature work. Kim is an activist and feminist who has worked as an advocate for women in film, facilitating workshop courses for Women In The Director’s Chair, Kodak’s Stop By Shoot Film and Film at University of Toronto and OCCAD. This year Kim received the CSC Master’s Award 2024.
Derko was DP on episodes of S5 of What We Do In The Shadows. She is also known for lensing episodes of Sex/Life S2 for NETFLIX, the series In Contempt for B.E.T., Save Me for CBC GEM, and Take Note for NBC, as well as 5 seasons of The Next Step. Feature film credits include the Soska Sister’s RABID, director Shelly Niro’s: Kissed by Lightning, John Greyson: Photo Booth & The Law of Enclosures and Su Rynard: Kardia. Tandem Unit DP work also includes Suits S8.
Second unit work includes ALERT missing persons S2, TRIGGERPOINT, Hollywoodland, “The Robber Bride”, “The Good Times are Killing Me” and the BBC mini series: “The State Within”, VFX unit on ANON and tandem unit, S8 on SUITS.
Ms. Derko has also shot projects for notable Canadian Artists: Janet Cardiff & George Miller: “The Paradise Institute”, Stan Douglas: “Nutka”, and Janieta Eyre, Simone Jones, Jorge Lozano, to name just a few. Also, she has worked on documentaries which have taken here from Scotland to the Philippines.
Derko garnered an GEMINI Award for cinematography on YOUKALI HOTEL in 2004. And a Much Music Video Award for Shadowy Men on A Shadowy Planet’s “We Don’t Call Them Chihuahuas Anymore”.
